Mom life is tough sometimes. Okay, let’s be real, it’s tough most of the time. We simply overlook a lot of the struggles because of the great joy interspersed between the pain and panic. But, we often struggle silently, wrestling alone with our fears and insecurities.

What if we didn’t have to battle alone? What if there were people and resources available to cheer us on and champion us along the way?

I am so excited to share my favorite new motherhood resource, Ashley Willis’s book: Peace Pirates: Conquering the Beliefs and Behaviors that Steal Your Treasure in Motherhood.

As soon as I read the title and description, I knew it was exactly the kind of resource that could bless the mamas in our Grow Your Faith tribe, so I jumped at the chance to review it. Let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint!

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Ashley’s honesty and humor are so refreshing. She opens her heart and home to the reader in a way that depicts both the beauty and brokenness of motherhood.

Ashley artfully weaves scripture throughout the book in a way that ignites hope and revitalizes the soul at every turn. She speaks truth in love and provides practical tools to help you thrive, even in the throes of chaos.

Peace Pirates was such an easy read. I flew through it in just a few days! Ashley breaks down the four most common Peace Pirates that attempt to rob us of our peace in motherhood: mommy martyrdom, comparison chaos, clenching control, and excessive expectations. She provides practical tools to navigate the choppy waters of motherhood, and even has a simple quiz to help you identify the area you struggle most with.

I have personally battled with all of those pesky peace pirates, though probably struggle most with excessive expectations. So, I especially loved how she broke down the difference between seeking and expecting:

“When we seek the Lord, we are following a righteous desire to connect with Him and pursue His will. Whereas when we place our expectations on God (or anyone else for that matter), we are often driven by our own selfish desires to get what we believe we are owed. Seeking is asking; expecting is a passive-aggressive demand.”

As a mama who has placed way too many expectations on myself, my husband, my children, and God, this really resonated with me.

I also loved how Ashley explained the Hebrew word pictures for shalom, which is a word used for peace throughout the Bible. It means, “to destroy the authority attached to chaos.” Wow! That’s powerful! I had no idea that’s what it meant! God’s peace (which He has given to us) has the power to destroy the authority attached to chaos. That’s a promise that I, for one, intend to stand on.
