Struggling Reader?
Reading is one of the most essential skills we teach our children. But let’s be real–it can be a daunting task. Both our children struggled to read initially. And as an avid reader myself, it was heartbreaking to think I might not be able to instill the same love for reading in my own children.Â
Over the years, we’ve tried a number of different reading programs–both online and offline. I’m always looking for fun and engaging ways to inspire my children to love reading.Â
So, what about Reading Eggs?
Well, let me tell you, my kiddos immediately fell in love with Reading Eggs, and I think yours will too!
About the Product
Reading Eggs is an online reading program designed to help kids become fluent readers. You can access it from any phone, tablet, laptop or desktop device in a browser or in the app. It’s a self-paced program designed for kids ages 2-13, and is highly engaging. Up to 4 children are able to use it at the same time.
A subscription gives you access to 4 programs (5 if you choose to add on Mathseeds–I’ll share more about Mathseeds later in the post): Reading Eggs Jr., Reading Eggs, Fast Phonics, Reading Eggspress.
Students begin with a brief placement test and the intuitive app starts them at the appropriate level, where they can work through the program at their own speed. Kids earn golden eggs as they progress and can use their rewards to “purchase” fun items for their avatar in the store. Best of all, parents don’t have to worry about ads or in-app purchases as their kids shop or play. And, the more the kids play, the more they earn, which has been a huge motivator for my kiddos!
You can create individual profiles for each student, and there is a parent dashboard filled with information & tools–like the level your child is reading at, how many sight words they know, what they’ve done in the app, and how well they’re doing. There are also bonus materials like activity sheets (in English & Spanish) for each lesson and coloring sheets. These are super helpful, especially if you’re just starting out or are looking for supplemental support resources to enhance your reading program.
Kids also earn certificates, which they can have fun customizing. These are great to print for portfolios or to display proudly on the fridge or your child’s wall. Â
Fast Phonics
Fast Phonics is an interactive online phonics program that helps children (ages 5-10) become stronger readers by utilizing systematic phonics teaching to enhance reading skills.
The program includes 20 fun‑filled levels where kids learn important skills like letter‑sound recognition, blending, and spelling utilizing interactive games and activities kids actually want to play!
Reading Eggspress
Reading Eggspress is designed for ages 7-13Â and is great even for more advanced readers! Students will grow in reading skills & comprehension.
There are many areas for students to navigate through and fun activities to engage with.
Reading Eggs Jr.
Reading Eggs Jr. is designed for ages 2-4. It will start your toddler on the path to learning and loving reading!
With funny animation, toddler games and preschool activities, your child will have tons of fun as they learn essential life skills.
It includes a vast library of read-aloud books, alphabet games, songs, and phonemic awareness activities to help your child learn about words, sounds, and letters.
Mathseeds
Mathseeds is designed for ages 3–9 and is a full math curriculum! You get to try it during the free 30-day trial as well. You can choose to continue to have it as part of your plan after the trial.

How We Used the Product in our Homeschool
We used Reading Eggs to complement what we were doing for language arts in our homeschool. Each kid played the app on a smartphone or tablet for 10-30 minutes a day, 3-5 days each week over the past six weeks.Â
Our kids are nine & twelve currently. Each child took the placement test to start, and the app began them at the appropriate levels. Our nine-year-old son is still learning to read. He was placed in the Reading Eggs section and moved through the lessons there. He learned letters, sight words, and phonics skills. He also played Fast Phonics.
Our twelve-year-old daughter initially struggled to learn to read, but has grown a lot over the past few years. She began in the Reading Eggspress section and moved her way through that, where the focus was more on reading comprehension and vocabulary usage.
We found that our kids frequently asked to “play Reading Eggs” when they were bored, and they enjoyed sharing their progress with each other.Â
This program is also a great option to keep your kids progressing in their reading and math during summer or winter breaks because it doesn’t feel like “school”!
What I Loved
Reading Eggs is easy to dive into anytime of the year with accurate placement tests. The parent dashboard is simply laid out and you can quickly see what your children have been learning, and how well they’re doing. It’s great for your own information or for documentation of learning activities and progress reports. I also liked that it tells you what age your child is reading at because you see the progress as they move through the program (it also highlights how many phonic skills, sight words, and skills they have mastered at any given time).Â
I also love how fun and engaging the app is. Reading Eggs is one activity my kids NEVER complain about doing. In fact, when I send them off to go do Reading Eggs, they’re excited! They love to earn and spend their golden eggs and play with their avatars, which motivates them to complete more lessons and activities than I’ve required of them.Â
The app is simple to use and works well on all devices. We used it on Android, iPhone, iPad, and a Macbook. It worked seamlessly everywhere.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, we absolutely love Reading Eggs. It’s affordable and well worth the cost. The app is intuitive and incredibly engaging for children. The only downside is that you have to have an internet connection to use the app. My kids would have spent even more time on it if they had been able to use it on their devices without the internet while we traveled in the car or waited at places. It’s a great tool and I highly recommend it. It has helped both my kids immensely with their reading!
