Love was Jesusโ motivation to upset the world, and it should be ours too.
Tim Ross

What does it mean to upset the world? Right now, it seems like our world is definitely upset, but that is not what author Tim Ross meant when he wrote his new book, Upset the World. He defines upset as a verb meaning: โto disturb or derange completely.โ The book highlights how following Jesusโtruly following Jesusโwill upset the world in the best possible ways. The book is a quick read (less than 175 pages) and has a compact study guide you can purchase as well.
I try to review books I feel could help us grow our faith, and Timโs book certainly caught my attention! I received two copies of the book and study guide from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
You want to know how to upset the world? Do good.

What I loved
Tim shares the simple assignment we have as followers of Jesus: โTo turn the world upside down with the message, love, and hope of Jesus Christ.โ He provides practical tools that demonstrate how easy evangelism truly is. He challenges the reader to go deeper into their faith and to transform all of the worlds where the reader has influence (home, work, community, church, etc.). Tim shares transparently and vulnerably and spurs the reader to action.
Other Thoughts
Jesus wants to free us from the religious trappings of the to-do list.

Depending on your faith background, your theology may be stretched as you read this book. I would encourage you to read it anywayโall the way through! Dive deep and ask God to grow your faith as you seek His Truth. And then take whatever you can away from it and implement it in your everyday.
Iโll also note that while I love the questions and scriptures in the study guide, I donโt love the size. It was a bit hard for me to write in, but still worth the purchase. With great activation activities as well, it is perfect for individual or small group (even churchwide) study.

Tim Ross is the senior pastor of the multi-ethnic, multi-generational Embassy City Church in Irving, Texas. Timโs dynamic teaching style and uncanny ability to help people understand the gospel message make him an asset to ministries across cultural and denominational lines.

We canโt let our plans get in the way of Godโs plans.

It is so easy to get stuck in a rut of religion or get so focused on our own needs and desires that we forget the reason we are on Earth in the first place. If we are not upsetting the world, we are not effectively building the Kingdom of God. Iโd love to know one thing you can do this week to go out and upset the world around you with the love and joy of Jesus Christ. I plan to set up a dinner date with a new neighbor. Leave a comment with your idea and letโs commit to upsetting our world together!

In order to reach people with the message of Christ, God may call you to do something or go somewhere you are not comfortable with. I know a friend who preaches to the inner city where crime is high and drugs are prevalent because God called him to do so.
Great point Natalie! God often calls us to get uncomfortable! Thanks for sharing! Prayers for your friend.
Bring kindness & compassion back by following the Golden Rule. Keep arrogance in check. Please don’t tell people to ‘read their bible’…instead, show them where to look.
